The composition's timeline:
(1939) JAMES JOYCE: "Finnegans Wake" [cryptogramee]
(1959) Polish trad.: "Helokanie" (arr. Stanisław Hadyna) [pre-imitatee]
(1977) DAVID BOWIE & BRIAN ENO: "Warszawa" [imitatee]
(2012) KRZYSZTOF BARTNICKI: imitator, cryptogramming
The base text is Joyce's "Finnegans Wake" from which Bartnicki removes all but the letters in the musical set {ABCDEFGH}. (The cryptogram is the same one used in the so-called "Bach motif"; where B=B flat, H=B natural.) Bartnicki determines the musical phrasing and note duration, pulling out and accentuating sequences that match Bowie and Eno's "Warszawa", itself a variation on a Polish folk tune, effetively blurring the identity of the author/composer.
